IT Chat - News, tips, hints, ideas and freebies for people building websites or blogs

Welcome to the IT Chat blog!

Welcome to the new blog from website-academy.com which I’ve decided to call laptopmanpaul.co.uk - IT Chat, me being Paul, the picture in the banner showing the laptop and this blog being the chat.

Being a big fan of all things to do with the internet, I’m constantly gathering snippets of useful information, great websites to browse, interesting features from the press, info from books and handy hints from friends.

I struggle to organise these in a coherent way, and consequently I have great long lists of ‘favourites’ which I seldom get to look at.

I’ve decided the best way to log this information, share it and encourage new contributions is to start a blog.

This blog is aimed at non-experts … people who are pretty advanced with their website making, but who are still discovering and learning.

I wouldn’t claim to know it all for one minute, but my knowledge and experience have increased greatly in the six years since I started making websites and I’m constantly open to new ideas, suggestions and techniques and would like to use this blog to pass on what I’ve discovered and hear from other website makers about what they’ve discovered.

So, to get the ball rolling:

  • This blog is created from Wordpress, a free blogging tool which I’ve gone for because it’s easy to use, I like it’s style and there are heaps of templates to choose from
  • The theme I’ve used is ‘Blue Box’ which is created by Bob … I’ve hacked it slightly to allow me to use the image of my laptop and work area for the logo and I’ve changed the title in the header by removing ‘Blue Box’ and adding ‘laptopmanpaul.co.uk’
  • I’ve installed Wordpress via Fantastico, which does all the hard work for you - creates the database, sets up all the key admin data and so on.
  • I use nativespace.co.uk because they’re well-priced, Fantastico is included so you can install lots of free Open Source scripts and they provide very flexible hosting - if you need a bit more space or bandwidth, you can move up bit-by-bit.

My working areaSo there you go, that’s the start of me sorting through a pile of URLs, newspapers articles, cuttings from magazines and snippets from books.

Each blog will take you to places on the net which you might not be aware of - I hope you find it useful. By the way, the picture shows the work area where I compile this blog … tea being the essential ingredient as well as IT!

If you’ve anything of your own to add, please post a comment.
